What is a gout attack?

Gout is a type of arthritis characterised by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness, and swelling in one or more joints, commonly the big toe. It's caused by a buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints.

What are the symptoms of a gout attack?

Symptoms typically include intense joint pain, swelling, redness, warmth, and tenderness. The pain often starts suddenly, usually at night, and can be severe enough to make it difficult to walk or even bear weight on the affected joint.

How is a gout attack treated?

Treatment aims to relieve pain and inflammation and prevent future attacks. Medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), colchicine, and corticosteroids can be used to treat acute attacks. Medications to lower uric acid levels may be used to prevent future attacks.
