Gout is a type of arthritis characterised by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness, and swelling in one or more joints, commonly the big toe. It's caused by a buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints.
What are the symptoms of a gout attack?
Symptoms typically include intense joint pain, swelling, redness, warmth, and tenderness. The pain often starts suddenly, usually at night, and can be severe enough to make it difficult to walk or even bear weight on the affected joint.
How is a gout attack treated?
Treatment aims to relieve pain and inflammation and prevent future attacks. Medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), colchicine, and corticosteroids can be used to treat acute attacks. Medications to lower uric acid levels may be used to prevent future attacks.

Gout is caused by a buildup of uric acid in the blood, which can lead to the formation of uric acid crystals in the joints. Uric acid is a waste product that's normally filtered out by the kidneys.
You can reduce your risk of gout attacks by losing weight if you're overweight, limiting your intake of foods high in purines, avoiding alcohol, and staying hydrated.
If you're experiencing your first gout attack, have frequent or severe attacks, or have other medical conditions, you should see a doctor.
Risk factors include obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease, a diet high in purines (found in red meat, seafood, and alcohol), and a family history of gout.
Untreated gout can lead to chronic gouty arthritis, kidney stones, and tophi (deposits of uric acid crystals under the skin).
Home remedies include applying ice to the affected joint, elevating the joint, and resting. You can also talk to your doctor about over-the-counter pain relievers.
